Established in Hong Kong in May 2001, Partnerships for Community Development (PCD) is a community development NGO set up and funded by the Kadoorie Foundation, a Hong Kong-based trust founded in 1970 by the late Sir Horace Kadoorie, who believed in the motto: “Help people to help themselves”.
PCD believes that everyone, however deprived in material terms, has the right and the ability to lead a dignified and sustainable life in harmony with others, with nature, and with the world at large. Individual well-being is crucial in maintaining a harmonious and sustainable community. PCD believes that the community has to work together to reflect on its relationship with nature and on its cultural traditions.
During the past decade, China has experienced an ever widening rich-poor and urban-rural divide. This gap is exacerbated by the power of globalised commercialisation and consumerism. All over the world this alarming reality is unmistakably illustrated in the everyday life of vulnerable and disadvantaged rural populations; in particular, those who suffer not only from material deprivation, but also from discrimination and marginalisation in their society and culture.
PCD has been very much aware of this development trend. Over the past years, our programme has adopted a strategic approach that is people-centred, environmentally conscious and respectful of local cultures, and which reflects critically on values and practices enshrined in the mainstream development model.
Registered in Hong Kong in 1970, the Kadoorie Foundation (KF) is a charitable organisation. Besides PCD, KF also fully supports the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG). The Farm focuses on nature conservations and environmental education in Hong Kong, China and the region. PCD works with disadvantaged and marginalised communities in Mainland China.
