Rehabilitating earthquake struck communities

In the aftermath of the devastating Wenchuan Earthquake in May 2008, PCD has been supporting rehabilitation of community infrastructure and livelihood capacity through strengthening mutual support practice in Xiaojin County. With the support of the Board of Trustees, and in collaboration with other sister organisations, PCD drew up an action plan to respond to emerging needs after the disaster, initially for three years, from 2008 to 2011. We have expanded our rehabilitation support beyond our initial project site to Mianzhu, Pengzhou, Hanyuan, Guangyuan, Dujiangyan, etc. PCD provides seed money for small civic groups to take swift action to meet immediate needs of community health services and to restore the social fabric for mutual help. PCD also seeks to support community-based rehabilitation work that adopts eco-cultural principles, such as eco-designed transitional housing. Special attention is paid to the specific needs of vulnerable groups (such as the handicapped, women and children) in areas of social rehabilitation.
