Conserving local heirloom crop varieties is an important element in ecological farming. Agricultural modernisation has resulted in the loss of many old crop varieties which in turn endangers ecology and threatens food security and food safety. To promote conserving heirloom seeds owned by farmers, PCD and Minzu University of China collaborated in 2013-15 in a project to survey the situation of the conservation and loss of local heirloom crop varieties in Southwest China and to explore conservation strategies.
