The film Flow—Our 20-year Journey is now officially released. It is PCD’s attempt to look back on its two decades of work, and a token of appreciation to all those who have accompanied us in the journey of exploration over the years. Through this film, we sincerely wish to share our thoughts and feelings with our companions as we walk along the path towards sustainable living.

PCD was established in Hong Kong in 2001. We strive to reconnect people’s hearts with nature and promote sustainable living practices. Inspired by the “Help people help themselves” spirit of the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association, an organisation that has put down roots in Hong Kong for more than 70 years, the PCD team has been searching for work approaches in community development which focus on personal reflection and transformation, critical understanding of mainstream development, respect for traditional culture, and cooperative partnership. After years of exploration and practice with our partners, PCD identified “nurturing community facilitators”, “facilitating cultural reflection”, “building inner strength” and “network building” as our theory of change.

As PCD enters its 20th anniversary, we wish to document our work through the film Flow—Our 20-year Journey. We also hope to share our core values and mission – reconnecting people’s hearts with nature – with our friends. Modern development has profoundly changed mankind and our planet. Problems such as climate change, species extinction crisis, environmental pollution, disintegrating community relationships are all closely related to the mainstream development model, the underlying issue of which is the distortion of relationship between human and other beings who share the planet. We believe all beings are interconnected and interdependent, and “nature” manifests both outside and inside of us. We have faith that change will occur when we rediscover our innate connections with nature. Thanks to the hard work of our partners in various regions, we know change is occurring slowly but surely.

The film is divided into two parts: “In the Mountains” and “In the Cities”. It documents four stories of partners from different places. These testimonies are unique yet interrelated, as they share common ideals and values. We would like to thank the production team and our local partners for their immense support in making this challenging project possible amid COVID-19 restrictions.

Andrew McAulay, the Chairperson of our Management Committee, said it best in the closing words of the film: “I wish PCD will continue to soak up the sun and the water and the soil, and continue to grow and evolve in a natural way in response to the evolving needs of our communities. It would not get stuck in a particular kind of dogma or way of doing things, but will continue to be receptive and open.” We are grateful for the encounters and mutual inspiration from our friends and mentors throughout the years, and we look forward to exploring practices of nature connection and coexistence between all beings with more friends in the years to come.
